Update information

Update October 2008
The refreshment is still going on. A bit slowly perhaps, but I was not satisfied with the smaller font and in several browsers 'strange' lay out issues ocurred. I'm working my way through this. This is the reason why some pages still look old and contain some oddities. I think information is more important than the looks but in the course of this winter I hope to solve most if not all 'problems'.

Update March 2007
Recently I started with a refreshment of the website. A slightly smaller font en adjustments that improve the accessability such as a new lay out of the menu on the left. Other changes I'm working on is new format: the addition of information on evolution, speciation and taxonomic postion and the picturing of the most important bones of the species with an explanation about form and function in respect to ecological adaptations. This work is by far not ready and will be an ongoing project. So check out these pages regularly because there may be changes and new additions. At this moment I'm working on a revision of the tubenose pages. New is also the addition of pictures of the Pink-footed Shearwater skull and a tutorial on cleaning skulls and skeletons. My reference collection still contains many bones that have to be photographed and published on this website. This will happen bit by bit. If you have comments or suggestions: please don't hesitate to send me a message.

Update July 2006
New skulls are Black-browed Albatross and White-chinned Petrel. Of the Great Shearwater more bones are presented on the osteology page of this species.

Update April 2006
A new page was added: the long awaited storm petrels. Further a few minor changes to other pages.

Update February 2006
Some changes to the shearwater pages concerning taxonomic issues. At the Razorbill skulls & bills page the addition of the larger subspecies torda and a bird with double white stripes at its bill are new.

Update October 2005
No changes to the content, but a removal to a new domain www.shearwater.nl

Update June 2005
Many new pictures of live birds have been added thanks to the generosity of Eric Preston who allowed me to use the pictures of his beautiful website. New skulls are the Grey-headed Gull and Cape Gannet.

Update February 2005
A sort of a make over has taken place. The Seabirds Skull Gallery has been changed into The Seabird Osteology Pages, a title that covers the content more properly.

Update December 2004

I started to add pages on the osteology in a more general sense: seabird-osteology. New are also pages linked to the skull gallery that show the most important bones of particular species. More of this will folow in next months.

Update October 2004
Recently I changed the font size because many people found the text difficult to read. A winter bill Atlantic Puffin is pictured now and I started to show also pictures of the live bird and sometimes of a dead one.

Update August 2004
Again adjustments to the shearwater pages.

Update June 2004
Based on new literature adjustments and rearrangements have been made to the gadfly petrel, the larger shearwater, the lesser shearwater and holarctic gulls pages. On several other pages a few minor changes.

Update May 20044
The fulmar and Calonectris pages have been revised and a few changes and additions found place on other pages. Now all species of fulmarine petrels are depicted. Other additions are pictures of the Sooty Albatross, a series of Brünnich's Guillemots, the White-billed Diver and the Soft-plumaged Petrel.

Update March 2004
The latest addition is a supplement to the Puffins page.

Update February 2004
Several new skulls have been added to the albatross, cormorant, shag and gull pages. A few others have been replaced by better pictures or pictures of better specimens. The anatomy page underwent a few changes and additions and new are also the pages concerning the skull development of some Atlantic alcids. I'm grateful to all people who have lent or given me skulls to take pictures and measurements for this and earlier updates.
