Genus Chroicocephalus

This genus contains 10 species of 'Masked' Gulls although some of them have white heads in their summer plumage and during the winter when they have dark 'earphones'.

  • Brown-headed Gull Chroicocephalus brunnicephalus, central southern Asia dispersing to more southern areas.
  • Black-billed Gull Chroicocephalus bulleri. Endemic of New Zealand
  • Grey-headed Gull Chroicocephalus cirrocephalus, two subspecies on each side of southern Atlantic:
    - C. c. cirrocephalus, southern South America, dispersing to Pacific coast.
    - C. c. poicephalus, east and west coast of Africa, dispersing inland.
  • Slender-billed Gull Chroicocephalus genei, Mediterranean, Asia Minor to Black en Caspian Sea.
  • Hartlaub's or King Gull Chroicocephalus hartlaubi, coastal South Africa from Namibia to Cape Province.
  • Brown-hooded Gull Chroicocephalus maculipennis, southern South America, coastal and inland.
  • Silver Gull Chroicocephalus novaehollandiae, two subspecies:
    - C. n. novaehollandiae, New Caledonia and North Australia.
    - C. n. forsteri, South Australia and Tasmania.
  • Bonaparte's Gull Chroicocephalus philadelphia, North America, inland and coastal.
  • Black-headed Gull Chroicocephalus ridibundus, temperate Europe and Asia, coastal and inland
  • Red-billed Gull Chroicocephalus scopulinus, New Zealand.
